This work addresses the institutional evolution of the electricity sector over the period between the 1950s and the 1980. The authors analyse the financial mechanisms that enabled the sector expansion under the aegis of governmental companies since the 19050s, the self-financing experience provided by the realistic tariffs policy after 1964, the increasing resource to external financing in the 1970s, and the virtual non-financing crisis in the 1980s.
